Welcome to N Plus One

Welcome to this, the first posting in the new 451 Group and Uptime Institute blog, N Plus One. This blog is intended to serve many purposes, most notably relating to our upcoming Symposium on Data Center Efficiency and Green Enterprise IT in New York in May.  We are building a dynamic, and possibly grounding conference, with a glittering array of speakers and participants, and we want to start debating the issues now.

But N Plus One will also serve a wider, long-term purpose.  The 451 Group’s acquisition of the Uptime Institute in October means the combined group now has a team of analysts and consultants with deep knowledge of the data center industry, the IT industry and the whole field of environmental (or Eco-Efficient) IT.   We are in constant discussions with corporate IT buyers, vendors, data center operators and owners, legislators, standards groups and technologists and engineers of all kinds. Some of the insights that we garner are published in formal reports, briefings and projects for our paying clients; but we will also regularly disseminate some of our knowledge, and test out our thinking, in this blog.

If you are involved in data centers, or in eco-efficient IT, and have an interest in how the industry is striving to deliver IT services in an energy efficient, cost effective and low carbon way, put us on your favorites list.  You will also find posts here on related subjects such as the impact of IT on corporate energy reduction, corporate carbon and energy management, cultural change, and even a little politics and legislation. You may also want to follow me (Andy Lawrence) or the Uptime Institute on Twitter .

In the next few weeks – just so you know what to expect – you will see posts about the Uptime Symposium program – unveiled this week ; the carbon content of energy;  when to replace ageing equipment (from an environmental point of view); and the practices and effciency  of small data centers.
