Andrew Donoghue, Analyst for Eco-Efficient IT, The 451 Group
Andrew Donoghue has been tracking and analysing the IT industry for over 14 years, researching the development and adoption of a range of business and consumer technologies. His main focus is desktop energy efficiency and power management and its implications for overall organisational sustainability. Other areas of speciality include environmental legislation in Europe and North America, and innovations in IT and energy.
Before joining The 451 Group, Mr Donoghue worked with several leading technology and environmental publications as a writer and project consultant, specializing in Green IT and related technologies. He has also held senior editorial team leader roles in a number of business publishing companies including CBS Interactive and Incisive Media.
Mr Donoghue has also been closely involved in research and fund-raising into technology re-use in developing countries, and the benefits for education, via organisations such as Computer Aid International. He has a degree in Zoology and Environmental Science from the University of Liverpool.
Andrew Lawrence, Research Director for Eco-IT, The 451 Group
Andy Lawrence is the Research Director for Eco-Efficient IT at The 451 Group. He has a particular interest in how the energy use and carbon footprint of IT can be reduced: how IT can become more sustainable; the role of IT in improving energy distribution and management; and the role of markets and governments in enforcing or encouraging sustainable practices.
Mr. Lawrence is the author of several 451 Group reports, including:

Mr. Lawrence has advised many businesses on their green IT strategies, both suppliers and end-user organizations. Before joining The 451 Group, Mr. Lawrence was an influential editor and analyst, co-founding London-based Infoconomy, and leading the editorial services of ComputerWire, a global IT information service. He was also the founding editor of London-based Computer Business Review magazine, where he pioneered critical, in-depth business coverage of the IT industry. He has appeared at many conferences, on TV, and written for national newspapers on the IT and eco-efficiency.
Jason Schafer, Senior Analyst, Datacenters, Tier1 Research
Jason Schafer joined Tier1 Research in August 2008 as a Senior Analyst covering data center technology, construction and engineering. Mr. Shafer has 14 years of experience in the mission-critical facilities field, including service in the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program and as a data center commissioning specialist for Lee Technologies, where he managed datacenter projects for customers such as the US Army, the US Patent & Trademark Office, Verizon, Comcast and Interactive Data Corporation. Mr. Schafer was also Lee Technologies’ technical training manager, developing data center technical training programs for internal use and for customers such as Microsoft.
Mr. Schafer attended North Carolina State University, where he studied Electrical Engineering. He is a certified infrared thermographer, and received his certification as a qualified commissioning process provider from the University of Wisconsin, Madison.
John Stanley, Research Analyst for EcoIT, The 451 Group
John Stanley is a Research Analyst for Eco-Efficient IT at The 451 Group, specializing in datacenter efficiency.
Prior to joining 451 Group, Mr. Stanley was a project manager and researcher at the Uptime Institute, where he worked with Institute founder Ken Brill on data center efficiency publications and original research. He has also prepared Institute contributions to industry input for U.S. Department of Energy data center efficiency initiatives.
In addition to his work with The 451 Group, Mr. Stanley was a contributing author to the Environmental Protection Agency’s 2007 Report to Congress on Server and Data Center Energy Efficiency and author (with Jonathan Koomey) of The Science of Measurement: Improving Data Center Performance with Continuous Monitoring and Measurement of Site Infrastructure.
Prior to focusing on data centers, Mr. Stanley worked in the energy efficiency consulting practice at Rocky Mountain Institute, helping private sector clients improve environmental performance and profitability via energy efficient designs and practices. He holds an MS degree from the Energy and Resources Group at the University of California, Berkeley and a BS in physics from North Carolina State University.
